Train the Mind, Transform the Dog

Train the Mind, Transform the Dog: How Your Mindset Shapes Your Dog’s Behaviour

It’s no secret that our dogs are deeply attuned to us. They can pick up on our emotions, read our body language, and even respond to subtle shifts in our energy. But as handlers, we often overlook how our mindset directly influences our training sessions. Becoming aware of this is the first step to transforming your dog’s behaviour and enhancing your bond.

Understanding the Link Between Mindset and Dog Behaviour

Imagine this: You arrive at a training session feeling stressed from work, distracted, and already a little irritable. You notice your dog isn’t quite as focused as usual. Before long, you’re mentally labelling them as “naughty” or “stubborn,” and becoming frustrated, the session spirals into a stand-off.

But what if their “behaviour” was a reflection of your state of mind, a state of mind which also affects your energy. Dogs are sensitive creatures who react to the emotional cues and energy we give off. If your mindset is one of frustration, they’re likely to become anxious or distracted in response, some dogs will even get ‘silly’ as an attempt to diffuse the emotions/energy they are picking up. If you’re calm and centred, they will mirror that energy, I see it all the time with the clients I work with, once you learn to harness the right energy it creates huge changes in your dog and in a beautiful spiral of good feelings it comes back to you!

So how to work with mindset? It’s about shifting from a problem-solving approach to one of curiosity, compassion and empathy, understanding that our dogs are doing the best they can with the information that we give them.

Simple Ways to Cultivate a Positive Mindset During Training

1. Start with Mindful Breathing: Before each training session, take a few deep breaths to centre yourself. This not only calms your nervous system but also helps you become fully present.

2. Practice Mindful Walking: If your dog seems agitated or distracted, slow down. Focus on the sensations of the walk, how does the ground feel beneath your feet, what is the air like, don’t worry about your dog, don’t correct their walking, just focus on you for 5 minutes then notice how your dog’s behaviour shifts when you’re fully engaged in the moment.

3. Reframe Your Thoughts: Instead of thinking, “Why won’t my dog listen?” try asking, “What is my dog trying to communicate to me, what is really going on, can I help them?” This small shift in language helps you approach challenges with empathy rather than frustration.

The Benefits of a Positive Mindset

When you bring a positive and balanced mindset to your training, it changes everything. You become more patient, your dog becomes more responsive, and you start to enjoy training as a shared experience rather than a chore. This mindset shift helps to:

·        Build stronger communication and trust between you and your dog.
·        Reduce stress and frustration for both handler and dog.
·        Create a training environment where learning becomes easier and more enjoyable.

Remember, the goal isn’t to be perfect. It’s about staying aware and making small adjustments that lead to big transformations. Next time you’re training, pause and check in with your mindset. Are you approaching this session with an open heart and a calm mind? If not, take a moment to reset. Your dog will thank you for it.
